Stubbington Swamp

Project Type

Full Garden Re-design

Date

November 2024

Location

Stubbington

When I first visited this client it was winter and it had been raining fairly constantly for a few days. Being a new build site without a lawn I expected some mud but not the swamp that I was faced with. The drainage was so bad that the water was pooling in several places and it walking on it proved impossible. The client had also been told by it off the builders they would have a flat garden - it was far from flat !

The brief was straightforward; to create a contemporary garden to suit a professional couple who wished to entertain. They wanted a large, flat lawn area and lots of planting space to encourage an increasing interest in plants.

A large patio area positioned on a 45 degree angle enabled access to two sets of patio doors as well a space that can be used to dine. A stepping stone path leads to a second paved area that is soaked by the last rays of evening sun. Raised beds at the back help to mitigate the level changes and allowed the lawn to be levelled.

When progressing to the implementation phase the drainage issue needed to be resolved first with the building company returning to site to put in a French drainage system. Porcelain paving and split faced tiles created a contemporary but timeless feel.

The planting is yet to be completed but this garden will only mature and look better over time.
